About Brochan Lom

Brochan Lom, a group of some 16 male voices, emerged onto Winnipeg’s already very healthy music scene in 2000. The baton was very capably taken up by Mr. Fred Simpson, a Winnipeg music educator and performer with wide-ranging musical interests, be they Celtic, liturgical, operatic or other. As a bass, Fred was well known in the musical community of Winnipeg. For his new group he recruited many former singers from the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, which guaranteed the inclusion of some lusty voices. Brochan Lom sang under his able leadership for nearly a quarter-century, till his passing in January 2025.

The choir has performed many times at the Scottish Pavilion at Folklorama; the annual Tiger Hills Festival near Treherne; for Scottish organizations in Winnipeg like the Robert Burns Club, the Scottish Gentlemen’s Society, and the St. Andrew’s Society; the Clan Ross celebrations; Masonic Temple functions; and for numerous Christmas and Robbie Burns Day engagements during our annual round of seniors’ residences. We pressed two Brochan Lom CDs, about 2001 and about 2008.

One of the most exciting performances for Brochan Lom was singing the emotionally-loaded “Flower of Scotland”—accompanied by a dozen or more highland pipers—at a dinner in 2012 at the RBC Convention Centre, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Selkirk Settlers’ arrival in Red River. The 12th Earl of Selkirk, John Andrew Douglas-Hamilton, was in attendance.

In the transition to Brochan Lom’s new lineup, the baton was seamlessly passed along in September 2025 to our new musical director, Mr. Brock McEwan, who is no stranger to the Winnipeg choral music scene, as singer, composer and conductor. Brock is taking Brochan Lom in new directions, bringing more recent material into our repertoire in tandem with our Celtic favourites. Ms. Kerrine Wilson has been our very talented accompanist on piano during the 2025–2026 season.

In May 2026, we had the great honour of being invited by the Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba, Her Honour Anita R. Neville, to sing during the annual Awards Ceremony for the Manitoba Historical Society, of which she is the Patron. Our performance of Stan Rogers’ historical tribute, Northwest Passage, brought nostalgic tears to some members of our audience, and to some of the singers, too!
